Frequently Asked Questions

Can a new player play on a younger team?

Players must play in the appropriate age group. League and governing-body rules do not permit players to move down. Playing up may be possible with special permission; contact the board to discuss options.

How are age groups determined?

Using the August 1–July 31 age year, players are grouped by the age they are on July 31, 2026. A player born July 31, 2014 turns 12 by the cutoff and moves to U14. A player born August 1, 2014 turns 12 after the cutoff and may remain in U12.

How can my player become a referee?

Players must be at least 13, complete the required online training, and pass the certification test. SYAA supports and mentors new youth referees. Contact the board for current certification and assignment information.

When does the season start and end?

Practices usually begin in October and games begin in November. The season normally ends in late February, with some teams advancing into GYSA Cup finals in March.
